How to get your music on Spotify

To put a song on Spotify you need a music distributor. Here is the process, how long it takes, and what to do once your song is live.

You need a distributor

Spotify does not accept uploads from individual artists. Songs reach it through a distributor, which delivers your music and metadata in the format Spotify requires and collects the royalties Spotify pays.

Step by step

  1. Pick a distributor and create an account.
  2. Upload your song as WAV, with square 3000 × 3000 px cover art.
  3. Add the title, artist name, genre and credits. Use the same spelling of your artist name every time so that releases land on one Spotify profile.
  4. Choose a release date at least 7 days ahead. Four weeks gives you time to pitch the song to Spotify's editors from Spotify for Artists.
  5. Submit, and wait for the distributor's review.
  6. After approval it is delivered to Spotify, which usually has it live within a few days.

After the song is live

  • Claim your profile on Spotify for Artists to see your listeners and add a photo and bio.
  • Pitch your next release through Spotify for Artists at least a week — ideally four — before its release date.
  • Streams are reported and paid with a delay of about two months, whichever distributor you use.

The same release goes to Apple Music, TikTok, YouTube Music, Deezer and the other stores at the same time, so you upload once.
